Harvey Hunter
The protagonist of the novel and one of the most experienced scouts of North Greenwich. At thirteen, Harvey was separated from his family during the attacks of October 2013 and grew up underground under the protection and discipline of Adam Stewart. At thirty-eight, he is known for his calm under pressure, his ability to survive above ground, and his loyalty to the community that raised him.
Fiona Blackwell
A young woman from the western communities of the London Underground. Intelligent, guarded and stubborn, Fiona becomes the most important person in Harvey’s life. Her capture by the Iron Legion transforms a political conflict into a deeply personal mission.
Adam Stewart
The station manager of North Greenwich and one of the most influential leaders in underground London. A former banking director before the war, Stewart built one of the network’s most stable and prosperous communities. To Harvey, he is mentor, leader and father figure.
Cole Maddox
A former soldier of the French Foreign Legion and one of North Greenwich’s most effective fighters. A veteran of numerous surface expeditions, Cole is pragmatic, disciplined and extremely dangerous in combat. He stands beside Harvey during the events at Bank.
Wesley Pike
The leader of a resistance movement opposing the expansion of the Iron Legion. Determined and without illusions, Pike is willing to sacrifice almost anything to prevent Salim al-Kadir from dominating the network.
Salim al-Kadir
The principal antagonist of the novel. Leader of the Iron Legion and master of King’s Cross St. Pancras, Salim is charismatic, calculating and convinced that only absolute discipline can save humanity. His goal is to unite the entire Underground under his rule.
Alastair McDougall
A Scotsman and the owner of the only functioning pub in North Greenwich. On the surface, he is a merchant and landlord. In truth, he knows more about the tunnels, smuggling routes and relationships between stations than most leaders. His pub is a meeting place for scouts, soldiers and traders, where rumours appear before they become reality.
Marcus Trenholom
An enigmatic survivor encountered during expeditions into western London. Marcus holds information about events that threaten the political balance of the network, and about changes taking place beyond the known communities.
Adrian and Mason
Adrian is a courier from North Greenwich and one of Harvey’s close friends. Mason is an experienced courier from the same community. Their disappearance during a routine mission to Canary Wharf becomes the event that sets the novel in motion.
Nick, Alban and Jack
Nick is the cautious administrator of Old Street, trapped between protecting his community and resisting pressure from the Iron Legion. Alban is a survivor who helps Harvey after the explosion at Bank throws him to the surface. Jack, a former supervisor on the Jubilee line, now coordinates trade and logistics in Canary Wharf, and knows far more about movement between stations than he lets on.
